Deciding on which season to see Europe is a crucial part of planning your travel itinerary. Some travelers may not have a choice (because of school or limited work leaves), but if you do have a choice as to when to see Europe, choose the season wisely. There are a few things to take into account, such as the timing of special events, crowds and comparative costs between peak and low tourist seasons. If you have already decided on which cities or countries you will visit, it is important that you look up the forecasted weather for those places and pack accordingly. Adverse weather in Europe is rare. It’s rainfall you have to be wary about, so pack a raincoat or jacket, especially if you’re traveling between July and August. 1. Winter – The winter months can be very cold throughout the continent and takes place from December to March. The Scandinavian countries have winter from September to May and it can be very, very cold with nights that are extremely long. Eastern Europe also has difficult winters. The temperatures in Sofia, Prague and Warsaw usually drops below freezing. Winter is not exactly the best time to visit Europe unless you’re into winter sports. In southern Europe however, the climate is milder but it’s also the wettest time of the year. 2. Spring – This is usually considered to be the best time to visit most parts of Europe. Spring is from March to June and a big part of the continent thaws out and days get longer. It’s a beautiful time to see tulips in the Netherlands and the gardens of different castles in bloom. In southern Europe, spring is still not beach weather, but it is already comfortable enough to go sightseeing. 3. Summer – Summers in Europe can be unpredictable. Sometimes they are beautifully warm and sunny and at times it can be stifling hot. It also rains occasionally. As a general rule, summer in Europe is from July to late August and this is the finest weather of the year. In the northern parts of Europe, the days can get exceptionally long. Even in the southern parts, there is still sunlight at 10 pm. All along the Mediterranean, summers are hot and dry and the beach gets really crowded. Most cities in Europe can get quite humid and uncomfortable in the summer. 4. Autumn/Fall – Temperatures begin to cool down from mid-September and winter starts creeping in by November. This is similar to spring climate-wise and it can also be a great time to travel. In the northern parts of Europe, the scenery turns into brown and gold as trees start to shed their leaves. In southern Europe, the days become milder but are still quite warm. Balmy nights are not uncommon in September and October. It definitely pays to do a little research on when the major festivals are taking place in the countries you will visit. You may have to tweak your plans a little to join the party ,so you can join in the local culture and this usually turns out to be a major highlight in your trip! If you’re not interested in any festivals however, try to avoid traveling through the particular city or town. Just remember that major festivals attract huge numbers of tourists and costs may also rise, so adjust your budget accordingly and reserve your accommodations in advance. At the moment various tech-sites around Europe are abuzz with rumours that a new generation of smart phones based upon Google’s ever more ubiquitous mobile operating system, Android, are to be launched in Europe in time for the fourth quarter rush (September/October onwards). The source of the speculation is in large part down to a leak featured on the techsite, Omio, which claims to have got its hands on a release schedule for new phones by one of the big networks in Britain for the final year quarter of 2010. Among the big name manufacturers are Samsung, Nokia, Sony, HTC, etc. However the greatest interest has been in the (as yet still alleged) HTC releases. Around the names ‘HTC Gold’ and ‘HTC Ace’ feverish speculation has mounted with various claims from those in the know that the Gold is a Windows Mobile 7 based phone while the Ace is an Android device (possibly based upon HTC’s iPhone challenger in the United States, the HTC Evo 4G). Since no official comment has been offered by either the Korean-based manufacturer or the British phone network it is impossible to state with any certainty whether the leak is factual or not (despite the claims found on some sites). However, if true, and if the Ace is based upon the Evo, then it would certainly meet the demands of European consumers that have grown in the last year and more as they have seen the quality and performance of mobile phones in the United States slowly creep ahead of their European counterparts (in no small measure due to the launch in the US of Google’s own HTC-made Nexus, and a stark contrast with the situation that existed just a few years ago when US phones invariably lagged behind those available in Europe and elsewhere). The HTC Evo is by all accounts a powerhouse phone coming with a 4.3 inch AMOLED touchscreen display, 8mp camera (and front camera), 1Ghz Snapdragon CPU (the Ace has been predicted to sport one of the new 1.5Ghz chips due out at the end of the year from Qualcomm), Android 2.1 (the Ace is alleged to run on the as yet unreleased new version of Google’s operating system, Android 3.0 – most Android-based phones are now running some variant of 2.0), and all the usual gizmos: WiFi, GPS, etc. If the specs of the speculative Ace match (or exceed) those of the Evo then expect the HTC Android phone to be the must-have device this Christmas, and with Apple going through its crash-and-burn reception problems, exacerbated by Steve Jobs alleged email reaction, perhaps as much of an iPhone rival as its American cousin. As for the other phones featuring in the leak the Samsung i8700 Cetus seems to be generating the most interest, much of which is even more speculative than that surrounding the HTC Ace. So far predictions are centring on a mobile phone with features similar to the popular Galaxy S models. Another possible Android candidate to hit European shores, though it is not featured on the list leaked to Omio, is Motorola’s portentously named Android X, which was recently unveiled in the United States, and which may possibly turn up over here in some version before the end of the year (in the US it has been released in four network-specific versions, all variations of the same base model). Another power-house-in-a-brick, its specs broadly match those of the HTC Evo and so far US reviews have been very favourable, though quibbles about camera quality have concerned some. At the moment most Irish and European consumers find themselves with a raft of older model Android and Windows based phones from various manufacturers with less than impressive specs compared to the new crop available elsewhere but with the tantalising promise of a wave of new Android based sets launching here in the coming months complaints about a lack of real choice may well disappear. Finally what of Nokia I hear you ask you ask? Several phones based on the Finnish company’s once hugely popular Symbian operating system also feature on the leaked list, with most interest zeroed in on the upcoming Nokia N8. Though still popular around the world much of Nokia’s can-do-no-wrong sheen as been knocked off its once prominent halo. A series of mediocre phones (reaching its zenith – or nadir – with the Nokia N97) has left consumers with a bad taste in the mouth. While there is no denying Nokia’s abilities as a maker of mobile phones, its status as an iconic innovator has fallen way in recent times and reaction to the slow leak of information about the upcoming new flagship model, the N8, have been distinctly cool. While most mobile manufacturers have embraced Android or Windows Mobile as their preferred operating system Nokia continues with the increasingly tired looking Symbian which,despite a promised midlife facelift, looks distinctly old hat against the younger kids on the block. All in all it may be time to start saving your money now for none of these devices are going to come cheap but with mobile phones increasingly becoming multi-task machines, beyond mere talking and texting, these Android based smartphones will probably be the must-have buys for the savvy consumer in the latter half of 2010. There have been many great contributions made by the Cement Industry as a whole, for their continued efforts to discover new environmentally safe and sound options in the creating and processing of cement materials. In 2000 an awards program was established by the Portland Cement Association (PCA) in a committed effort to excel programs that would not only ensure a healthier and safer environment for communities, but would also improve technologies for maximizing sustainability and energy efficiency for “green building” designs. April 27, 2010 The Ninth Annual Cement Industry Environmental and Energy Awards revealed five U.S. companies, along with the Lafarge North America Inc. of Ontario Canada, which were being honored and presented Awards by the PCA and Cement Americas magazine. Brian McCarthy, PCA president and CEO had this to say, “The United States cement industry is dedicated to producing a superior product while challenging manufacturing policies and procedures to improve energy efficiency., The actions taken by these plants and many others are at the fore-front of manufacturing technology and position the industry as a key contributor to the development of the latest energy expertise.” The one company that stood out the most, bringing home 3 awards in different divisions of its company, was Lafarge North America Inc. In Ontario Canada they received the 2010 Overall Environment Excellence Award for implementing a project that is on the path of lowering fuel consumption and will result in a reduction of Carbon Dioxide and Sulfur Emissions being released into the environment. A focal point of the project was the planting of a variety of crops and the harvesting of others for use in promising trials to find a renewable and sustainable biomass source. Kiln operations were drastically improved after the installation of a new blower technology, and cement kiln dust has almost been completely eliminated during production. Topping off their impressive list of accomplishments was the planting of 3,000 trees on their plant property for habitat restoration. The project was also designed to promote education and the importance of climate change by including the community and enrolling the help of local scouts, scout leaders and parents. The second award, Environmental Performance Award, went to Lafarge North America Inc. in Sugar Creek, MO. The Sugar Creek Facility completed a wide variety of different projects in 2009 with the hopes of expanding their use of alternative raw materials and fuels that are used by the plant. With the joining of a third source, landfill gas, they were able to change out 17% of their fossil fuel consumption. The 17% less fossil fuel that is now not consumed by this facility works out to be over 30,000 tons of Carbon Dioxide from the combustion of coal. The third award, for Innovation, was given to the Lafarge North America Inc. in Tulsa Okla. During 2009, the Tulsa plant took advantage of an already existing waste fuel resource that the industry had been using for many years. Fuel derived from tires is often done by utilizing old used and broken tires; the Tulsa facility took this concept one step further and joined with Goodyear to recycle the waste that is procured from the tire manufacturing industry into the kiln cement manufacturing industry. The fourth award, the Outreach Award, was given to The Holcim (US) Inc. in Theodore, Alabama and was in honor of their extensive community outreach and compelling efforts during the 22nd annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup Day, in 2009. With a total of 71 volunteering employees and community members an extensive “hands on” cleanup mission began on the Theodore Industrial Canal. Many Holcim Inc. employees volunteered to take a leading role and be designated “zone captains” in the cleanup. The commendable results were the removal of 1.5 tons of waste from the water and shorelines. Holcim also assists their local community on Used Electronics Recycling Day; which has collected nearly 200,000 pounds of discarded electronic devices. The fifth award, the Land Stewardship Award, was presented to CEMEX of Xenia, Ohio for their plant’s cooperating efforts in helping to eliminate an invasive vine plant species that was encompassing approximately 5 acres of land; which continued with threats of aggressive spreading. In a joint effort from the local community, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Cedarville University a plan was developed and implemented which killed the infestation, allowing for the return of the area’s native vegetation. The final award, the Energy Efficiency Award, was given to CalPortland from Colton California. Their recognized accomplishments include some newly installed and highly efficient equipment. Their cutting-edge grinding of finished cement process will result in an annual reduction of 7 million KWh, while another 5.7 million KWh will be saved annually by maintaining their completed kiln leak prevention programs. They also installed a new cement terminal, which is projected to add another reduction of 3.7 million KWh. Any North American cement manufacturing plant can qualify for the Annual Cement Industry Environmental and Energy Awards Program; for their accomplishments that have taken place within the prior calendar year. The judges for the 2010 Awards were awarding performances that companies delivered in 2009. The judges came from independent groups which included the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, U.S. EPA-ENERGY STAR, U.S. EPA-Office of Policy, Economics and Innovation, Cement Association of Canada, Cement Americas, U.S. Geological Survey, World Resources Institute and World Wildlife Fund. Another program that further compliments the Portland Cement Association’s commitment to making long-term sustainable upgrades available to communities is their Annual Sustainable Leadership Awards.
